Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day: Four-year-old comic book fan Anthony Smith is deaf in his right ear and has hearing damage in his left. He also refused to wear his hearing aid (which he calls “Blue Ear” because it is blue), because “superheroes don’t wear hearing aids.” So in a long-shot attempt to help her son, Anthony’s mom emailed Marvel for ideas.
“She didn’t know a specific person to write to here at Marvel, and even figured it might get caught in our spam filters, but she sent it in anyway, because that’s the kind of great parent Christina is,” said Marvel editor Bill Rosemann. “And it was her inspiring effort to help her son that touched so many of us here. As a fellow parent of a toddler, I can understand where she’s coming from, so I forwarded the email around the rest of Editorial, asking what we could do to help, and like when Cap yells, ‘Avengers Assemble,’ the gang leapt into action.”
Not only did Anthony receive an image of the superhero Hawkeye, who lost 80 percent of his hearing back in the ’80s and wore hearing aids — Anthony also received a drawing of a brand-new superhero: “Blue Ear.”
Now, with his hearing aid back in, Anthony is able to “fight battles and help people.” His preschool, for hearing-impaired kids, recently hosted a superhero week to inspire the students to overcome their limitations.
DON’T miss the video. It’s the best thing you’ll see all day.

The comics world has been talking about it for months, but this is the week that the big DC “relaunch” officially arrives. DC Comics released only two new issues this Wednesday, the final book of the “old” DC Universe, Flashpoint #5, and the first book of the “New 52,” Justice League #1. After JL will come 51 other new comic books in the coming weeks, all of them starting over at Number One.

Galactus  - by Matt Rhodes
Says Matt: “Galactus is a problem. In comics he’s fantasic, a giant purple techno-demi-god that stands around vaguely menacing planets. When it comes to translating him into movie form, or even movie-caliber comic form (Ultimate: Galactus) he’s been turned into a space-dust-storm and swarm of giant metal bugs respectively. I read up on his backstory, and it turns out that Galactus is the only living creature to have lived before our universe and survive the big bang. We may have been a little hopped up on Hellboy, but we started thinking it would be great if Galactus looked alien, ancient, and gargantuan. He could be loosely human shaped, enough that legends of him could have mistaken him for a massive man”.

Since it was DCnU Superman’s first appearance, I went ahead and fixed the dialogue.

“Who were you waiting for, the guy in the $600 blueberry suit? COME ON!” (said in the voice of GOB Bluth from Arrested Development.)

Ms. Marvel doll from Tonner. It came out last week and was a limited release of only 300. There maaaay be some left.

What a great fucking way to give young girls unrealistic ideas about what their bodies should look like. Good job, Tonner and Marvel.

Daredevil #1 Audio Edition, download the mp3

Via Marvel.com:

About a month ago, Marvel Senior Editor Steve Wacker came up with the idea to record an audio edition of DAREDEVIL #1 so that the visually-impaired could enjoy the dawn of a new era for DD, his friends and his enemies. Additionally, this special project provides those who can see with a new take on what’s already being hailed as one of the best comics of 2011.

DAREDEVIL writer Mark Waid provides full panel descriptions directly from his script on this audio edition, while Marvel editors Tom Brennan, Ellie Pyle and Jordan D. White lent their voices to Daredevil/Matt Murdock, Kirsten McDuffie and Foggy Nelson, with White and Wacker also providing additional vocals. Marvel.com Video Editor Todd Wahnish recorded the piece, Marvel.com Associate Editor Ben Morse directed and Jordan White edited the final recording.

Download the DAREDEVIL #1 Audio Edition mp3 here.
